San Francisco: Elon Musk, who previously sued OpenAI, has now attempted to acquire the company. Reports indicate that Musk, along with a group of investors, proposed a $97 billion buyout to CEO Sam Altman, but the offer was met with a straightforward rejection—”No thank you.”

According to The Wall Street Journal, Musk and his investment group approached OpenAI’s board with the proposal, aiming to restore the company to its nonprofit origins. Musk’s attorney, Marc Toberoff, argued that if OpenAI were shifting toward a profit-driven model, then its original nonprofit stakeholders deserved fair compensation.

In a sharp response, Altman declined the offer publicly on X (formerly Twitter), even jokingly suggesting that OpenAI would be willing to buy X for $9.74 billion—a reference to Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of the platform in 2022.

Musk’s latest move follows two lawsuits he filed against OpenAI in 2024. In July, he accused the company of straying from its founding principles, turning into a corporate-driven entity rather than one focused on AI for public good. In August, he escalated the legal battle by alleging that OpenAI was racing to develop Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) for maximum profit, even accusing the company of racketeering.

Musk was one of OpenAI’s original backers but has since expressed frustration over its transition to a “capped-profit” model and its leadership’s growing commercial ambitions.
