New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (EC) on Thursday rejected Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s claims against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, calling them “incorrect and baseless.”

Earlier, Gandhi accused the CEC of protecting people allegedly involved in large-scale voter deletions, describing it as a “murder of Indian democracy,” according to Hindustan Times.

Responding firmly, EC officials said, “No deletion of any vote can be done online by any member of the public, as misconceived by Shri Rahul Gandhi.” They added that every voter deletion must follow proper legal procedure. “No deletion can take place without giving an opportunity of being heard to the affected person,” the Commission clarified.

Regarding Gandhi’s example of the Aland constituency in Karnataka, EC sources admitted there were attempts to fraudulently remove votes in 2023. However, they stressed that the attempts failed and that the Commission had itself filed an FIR to prompt a police investigation.

The EC also defended the credibility of elections in the region, noting that BJP’s Subhadh Guttedar won in 2018, while Congress’ BR Patil won in 2023.

Gandhi had further accused the EC of permitting centralized, software-based voter deletions nationwide. He claimed that the Karnataka CID sent 18 letters over 18 months requesting technical details like IP addresses and OTP logs, but received no cooperation. “EC knows who is doing this. They are defending the murderers of democracy,” Gandhi said, hinting at a “hydrogen bomb” of upcoming revelations on alleged “vote chori.”
