Mumbai: Amid two back to back incidents of mob lynching in the Nashik district and communal flare ups at several parts of Maharashtra, veteran Congressman and former minister Naseem Khan questioned whether the rule of law exists under the government led by Eknath Shinde.

Khan, who is the Working President of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee and former Minister of State for Home in the erstwhile Democratic Front government, said that the incidents of mob lynching by cow vigilantes put a question mark on the Shinde-government.

Khan referred to the incidents of 10 June when Lukman Suleman Ansari, a resident of Padga, was killed and his two friends Atiq Paddi and Aqueel Gavandi were injured in Igatpuri when they were transporting meat and the 24 June incident when Afaan Abdul Majid Ansari, a resident of kurla mumbai was killed and his colleague Nasir Sheikh was injured in Sinnar when they were transporting meat.

“The two incidents are shocking and happen in the same district,” said Khan after meeting the victims’ family. He demanded a thorough investigation into the incidents and a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the victim’s families. Khan demanded that a report must be sought from Nashik Rural Superintendent of Police Shahaji Umap.

On the riots, he said: “Riots and clashes were reported from several places including Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahmednagar, Kolhapur Shevgaon, Amravati, Nashik.” Khan wanted to know whether rule of law exists in Maharashtra or not. “Under Shinde-sarkar, does the state have a rule of law or goonda raj,” he said, adding that this is the land of ideology of Shahu-Phule-Ambedkar. “It appears either the government has lost control over the police and administrative machinery or they are turning a blind eye to such incidents,” he said.
