A dramatic political battle is unfolding in Tamil Nadu as speculation intensifies over a possible understanding between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to prevent C Joseph Vijay from forming the government despite his party emerging as the single-largest force in the Assembly elections.
The uncertainty comes as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam continues struggling to secure enough support to cross the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.
Governor Asks Vijay To Show Majority Support
Vijay met R. V. Arlekar for the second time in two days and once again staked claim to form the government.
However, sources said the Governor made it clear that TVK currently lacks the support of 118 MLAs required for a majority and asked the party to return only after securing the numbers needed to prove stability in the Assembly.
TVK won 108 seats in the election and currently has outside support from the Indian National Congress, taking its tally close to the halfway mark but still short of the required figure.
DMK Meeting Triggers Fresh Speculation
Soon after Vijay’s meeting with the Governor, the DMK convened a meeting of its newly elected legislators.
Party leaders later stated that although the public had placed the DMK in the Opposition, party president M. K. Stalin would have the authority to take any political decision if circumstances required it.
The statement immediately fuelled speculation that the DMK could explore a strategic arrangement with the AIADMK to stop TVK from taking power.
AIADMK MLAs Shifted To Resort
At the same time, around 40 AIADMK MLAs were reportedly staying at a resort in Puducherry amid the fast-changing political situation.
Sources claimed that after meeting party legislators, AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami urged MLAs to remain united and hinted that “good news” could emerge soon.
The developments have further intensified rumours of possible political coordination between the two Dravidian parties.
TVK Suspects Political Conspiracy
According to party insiders, TVK leaders now believe efforts are being made to block Vijay from becoming Chief Minister despite the party receiving the highest number of seats in the election.
Sources said some TVK legislators are even discussing the possibility of mass resignations if the DMK and AIADMK join hands to form the government through post-poll manoeuvring.
Political observers, however, view the resignation threat as a pressure strategy aimed at the Governor and rival parties amid the ongoing deadlock.
