Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who also holds the Irrigation portfolio, has sought approvals and financial aid from the Centre for six new irrigation projects worth ₹11,123 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY). Additionally, he has requested approvals and funds for ongoing irrigation projects in the state.

On Tuesday, Shivakumar met Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil in New Delhi and submitted a formal appeal. The proposed projects aim to enhance irrigation potential and flood management in various districts, including Vijayapura, Dharwad, Belagavi, Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, and Raichur.

The six new proposals include:

  • Flood management and a border area programme at Bennehalla
  • Creation of irrigation potential for 16,000 hectares under the Sonthi lift irrigation project on the Bhima River
  • Extension, Renovation, and Modernisation (ERM) of canals such as Malaprabha, Indi branch (Upper Krishna project), Ghataprabha right bank, Chikkodi branch, and Tungabhadra left bank

Shivakumar also sought approvals and central assistance for key pending projects, including the Mekedatu project, Upper Bhadra project, Kalasa-Bhanduri Nala project, and surplus water diversion from the Mahanadi-Godavari basin to the Krishna-Cauvery and Pennar-Palar basins. Additionally, he urged a Gazette notification for the KWDT-II (Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal) award.

The Deputy CM informed the Union Minister about Karnataka’s plan to propose automation of dams and canal systems for efficient irrigation management. The Union Jal Shakti Ministry advised the state to resubmit the Yettinahole drinking water project through the RDPR department for consideration under the Jal Jeevan Mission, as it was initially submitted via the Irrigation department.
