In a dramatic political upset, former Union Minister Dilip Ray has won the fiercely contested Rajya Sabha Elections Odisha 2026, clinching the fourth seat with crucial backing from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Ray, who contested as an independent candidate, defeated joint opposition nominee Datteswar Hota, supported by the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Indian National Congress, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
Cross-Voting Turns the Game
Ray’s victory was powered by significant cross-voting from opposition MLAs, which tilted the balance in a closely fought contest. Several legislators from both BJD and Congress reportedly voted against their party lines, helping Ray secure the numbers needed to win.
Sources indicated that multiple MLAs from the opposition camp defied party leadership, exposing deep cracks within the alliance.
Numbers Game and Strategic Support
Under the proportional representation system, Ray required at least eight first-preference votes to stay competitive. With BJP’s backing, support from independents, and unexpected cross-votes, he managed to cross the crucial mark.
Second-preference votes during counting further strengthened his position and ultimately sealed his victory in the tight race.
Opposition Unity Crumbles
The result has triggered political tremors within opposition ranks. Despite efforts by BJD chief Naveen Patnaik and state Congress president Bhakta Charan Das to keep their MLAs united, several leaders reportedly broke ranks.
The episode has raised serious questions about internal discipline and coordination within both parties.
Dramatic Moments Before Voting
The election also saw high drama, with BJD MLA Chakramani Kanhar arriving at the Assembly after being reportedly missing for days. Meanwhile, political tensions were also cited behind some cross-voting decisions within party ranks.
BJP Strengthens Grip in Odisha
Earlier, the BJP had already secured two seats through its candidates Manmohan Samal and Sujeet Kumar.
With Dillip Ray’s victory, the BJP-backed camp now effectively holds three out of the four seats decided in this election. The remaining seat went to BJD leader Santrupt Mishra, who won comfortably.
Big Political Signal Ahead
Ray’s surprise win has reshaped the political narrative in Odisha, highlighting BJP’s growing influence and exposing fractures within opposition parties.
As cross-voting takes centre stage, the results are expected to have long-term implications for state politics and future electoral strategies.
