Government Puts Cap on Diesel Sales at Petrol Pumps: Here’s What It Means for Consumers and Businesses

New Fuel Rules Announced

The Centre has introduced temporary restrictions on the purchase of diesel and petrol by commercial and institutional consumers from regular fuel stations, aiming to prevent large-scale diversion of fuel meant for retail customers.

Under the latest directive, organisations and bulk users have been asked to obtain fuel through their own authorised consumer pumps rather than relying on public retail outlets.

Diesel Purchase Limit Introduced

As part of the new measures, petrol pump operators have been instructed not to sell more than 200 litres of high-speed diesel to a single customer or vehicle in a day.

Authorities have also prohibited the resale of diesel purchased from retail fuel stations, a move intended to tighten monitoring and improve supply management.

Why the Government Has Acted

Officials say the decision is designed to stop bulk buyers from sourcing fuel through retail channels that are primarily meant for individual motorists.

The government believes that restricting large-volume purchases at public fuel stations will help ensure adequate availability for ordinary consumers while reducing the possibility of fuel being diverted for commercial redistribution.

Restrictions to Remain for 90 Days

The order will remain effective for an initial period of up to 90 days. However, authorities have kept the option open to withdraw the restrictions earlier if circumstances permit.

The temporary nature of the measure suggests that the government will closely monitor fuel supply patterns and market conditions before deciding on any further course of action.

Will Regular Vehicle Owners Be Affected?

For most private vehicle owners, the changes are unlikely to have any noticeable impact. The restrictions are primarily targeted at institutional and commercial users purchasing fuel in large quantities.

Consumers filling fuel for personal use can continue purchasing petrol and diesel through normal retail channels without any major changes.
