Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has issued a directive to the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to enhance safety measures in areas across Mumbai suburbs that are susceptible to potential landslides or hillslides. The directive, issued during a meeting of the Relief & Rehabilitation Ministry, focuses on implementing protective measures in disaster-prone zones to ensure the safety of residents.
Several areas, including Chembur, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Powai, and other suburbs, have been identified as at risk. The BMC has been instructed to swiftly construct protective walls and implement other necessary measures to mitigate potential accidents and safeguard lives and property in these regions.
The initiative follows a comprehensive survey conducted by IIT-Bombay, commissioned by the State Disaster Management Department, which identified dangerous spots in Mumbai suburbs. Ajit Pawar emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of citizens residing in these vulnerable locations.
“Many citizens live in such dangerous places. It is necessary to take priority measures to avoid accidents, loss of life, and property damage in such dangerous places. For this, the BMC should prioritize the construction of protective walls and other necessary measures in these areas,” stated Ajit Pawar during the meeting.
Furthermore, Ajit Pawar directed officials to ensure that, upon receiving disaster relief funds from the Centre, the BMC is promptly reimbursed for the expenses incurred in implementing safety measures.
The meeting, chaired by Ajit Pawar, included top officials such as Additional Chief Secretary of Housing Valsa Nair, Additional Commissioner of Mumbai Municipal Corporation Ashwini Bhide (via videolink), Principal Secretary of Planning Department Saurabh Vijay, Secretary of Finance Department Shaila A., Director of Disaster Management Department A. B. Dhulaj, among others.
