In a bid to ensure transparency and global scrutiny, Pakistan is set to welcome international observers and journalists for its upcoming general elections on February 8. Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi announced on Tuesday that the government is currently processing over 170 requests, including two dozen from India.

Solangi revealed that 49 visas had already been issued to foreign journalists, with an additional 32 applications currently under process. The High Commission in New Delhi has received approximately 24 requests from Indian journalists, contributing to the total of 174 requests from various outlets.

Addressing concerns and dispelling rumors, Solangi emphasized that the accreditation cards issued to foreign journalists and international observers were limited to Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. However, he assured that requests for visiting other cities were being processed on a case-to-case basis.

In addition to journalist requests, the minister highlighted the involvement of international observers, with 25 applications from Britain, eight from Russia, 13 from Japan, five from Canadian parliamentarians, two from South Africa, and five from Commonwealth nations currently being processed.

Solangi expressed regret over rumors circulating that no international observers or journalists would be covering the elections in Pakistan. He dismissed such claims, stating that there was no truth to the notion that the country would conduct a “burqa-clad election.”

The move to invite international observers was initiated by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in October 2023, emphasizing the commitment to a fair and transparent electoral process. The upcoming elections will be closely monitored by a diverse group of observers and journalists, ensuring a global perspective on Pakistan’s democratic proceedings.
