Delhi: New Delhi is facing a severe cold spell, with temperatures plunging sharply across the city over the weekend. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ayanagar recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 2.9 degrees Celsius, marking one of the chilliest nights in recent years.
Several areas in the national capital experienced cold wave conditions, with Palam dipping to 3.0°C, its lowest in several years. Safdarjung recorded a minimum of 4.8°C, expected to drop further to around 3°C tonight, while the Ridge station reported 3.7°C as the minimum and 18.8°C as the maximum. IMD forecasts suggest that these frigid conditions are likely to continue through the day, keeping residents bundled up.
Adding to the discomfort, Delhi’s air pollution levels remain high. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) at 293 as of Monday morning, categorised as ‘poor.’ This was slightly higher than Saturday’s AQI of 291. Fog blanketed early morning areas like Dhaula Kuan and Sarai Kale Khan, reducing visibility and intensifying the cold conditions.
The capital has been experiencing sustained chilly weather over the past few days. On Sunday, the city woke to a windy and frigid morning with temperatures around 6.6°C, accompanied by a thin layer of smog. Saturday’s minimum temperature was 5.4°C, with intermittent rainfall in some parts, while Friday saw lows hovering around 5°C.
Meanwhile, preparations for the 77th Republic Day parade are ongoing on Kartavya Path, with rehearsals continuing amid the harsh winter conditions, posing additional challenges for performers and organisers.
