The investigation into the catastrophic hotel fire in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar has taken a fresh turn with the arrest of a staff member allegedly linked to the incident that claimed 21 lives and injured dozens more.
Police on Saturday confirmed the detention of a 65-year-old cook employed at the hotel, with investigators examining whether negligence inside the property’s kitchen operations contributed to the outbreak of the blaze.
Fatal Fire Triggered Questions Over Building Safety
The fire erupted at a five-storey accommodation facility in the Hauz Rani area on June 3, rapidly spreading through the structure and trapping occupants inside.
As forensic teams and investigators examined the site, authorities reportedly uncovered a series of safety shortcomings that may have complicated rescue efforts and increased the scale of the disaster.
Officials stated that emergency evacuation became extremely difficult due to structural conditions inside the building, including limited exit access and design features that restricted escape routes during the fire.
Victims Included Foreign Nationals
Among those who lost their lives were both Indian and foreign nationals, highlighting the scale of the tragedy and drawing wider attention to safety standards in commercial lodging facilities.
Several injured survivors continue to receive medical treatment while authorities work to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the incident.
Owner Already Facing Serious Charges
Prior to the latest arrest, police had taken the hotel’s owner into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have accused the owner of operating the establishment despite alleged regulatory deficiencies and have invoked multiple legal provisions relating to negligence, public safety and loss of life.
Investigators are also examining whether administrative failures and regulatory breaches contributed to the conditions that allowed the tragedy to unfold.
Separate Legal Troubles Surface
During the course of the investigation, law enforcement agencies reportedly uncovered another matter involving alleged misuse of residential credentials and identity documentation.
Officials are reviewing evidence connected to a separate case in which individuals were allegedly provided assistance in obtaining Indian identification documents through improper means.
Government Orders Wider Review
The incident has prompted the Delhi government to initiate a broader review of fire preparedness and compliance standards across the capital.
Senior officials have directed departments to examine safety certifications, building approvals and emergency response measures in commercial establishments to identify potential risks.
