Maharashtra Expands Education Support for Maratha Students, Approves Wide Range of Scholarship and Aid Schemes

In a significant policy decision aimed at strengthening educational opportunities for the Maratha community, the Maharashtra government has approved a comprehensive set of student welfare measures that will provide financial and academic support across various levels of education.

The new framework is designed to widen access to scholarships, fee assistance, vocational programmes and educational reimbursements, bringing thousands of students under the ambit of government-backed support initiatives.

Focus on Higher Education and Skill Development

Officials said the measures are intended to reduce financial barriers faced by students pursuing secondary education, college studies, professional courses and skill-based training programmes.

The initiative is expected to benefit students enrolled in both traditional academic streams and employment-oriented vocational courses, helping them continue their education without excessive financial strain.

Scholarship Assistance Expanded

Under the revised policy, eligible students from the Maratha community will receive access to financial assistance programmes for studies beyond Class 10. Additional scholarship support has also been planned for students at the secondary and higher secondary levels.

The government believes these interventions will encourage more students to remain in the education system and pursue advanced studies.

Support for Professional Courses

Students securing admission to professional programmes, including those offered outside Maharashtra, will also be eligible for educational assistance under the new framework.

Authorities have indicated that support will extend to candidates studying in both aided and unaided institutions, broadening the reach of the programme.

Vocational Training Opportunities

The policy also places emphasis on employment-oriented skill development. Benefits linked to driver and conductor training programmes will be made available to eligible candidates, providing pathways to vocational certification and job opportunities.

Officials say skill-building remains a key component of the government’s broader youth development strategy.

Relief for Students Admitted Through Special Quotas

Students who obtain admission through institution-level quotas after the completion of centralised admission rounds will also be covered under the newly approved benefits, ensuring that educational assistance is not restricted solely to students entering through standard admission channels.

Future Benefits to Continue Automatically

One of the notable aspects of the decision is the provision that any educational welfare measure introduced for beneficiaries under similar state-supported educational categories in the future may also be extended to eligible Maratha students unless revised by the government.

This mechanism is intended to ensure continuity of support without requiring repeated policy amendments.

Move Seen as Major Outreach to Students

Education experts believe the expanded support structure could help improve enrolment, reduce dropout rates and increase participation in higher education and professional courses.
