New Delhi: A tragic late-night road accident in West Delhi’s Moti Nagar claimed the life of a 40-year-old man after a speeding Mahindra Thar SUV rammed into his motorcycle. Police confirmed the incident occurred around midnight on Friday.
The victim, identified as Bechu Lal, had parked his motorcycle behind a truck near a traffic signal while on his way to a hospital. According to his younger brother, a Thar came from behind at high speed and hit the bike with such force that Bechu Lal was killed instantly.
After colliding with the motorcycle, the SUV mounted the footpath, crashed into an electric pole, smashed into a stone bench along the roadside wall, and finally came to a halt a short distance away. The driver, however, fled the spot immediately after the accident.
Police have registered a case and are scanning CCTV footage from the vicinity to ascertain the vehicle’s speed and track down the accused. The victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem, and his family has been informed.
This incident has once again raised concerns about reckless driving involving SUVs in the capital. Earlier this month, in a similar case, a pedestrian was killed and another critically injured after being run over by a white Thar near the Gyarah Murti landmark in Chanakyapuri. In that case too, the vehicle had swerved onto the pavement before mowing down pedestrians.
