NCERT Introduces New Partition Horrors Remembrance Day Module, Names Jinnah, Congress and Mountbatten as Key Players in Partition

New Delhi: To mark Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has rolled out a new educational module for schools that seeks to present a more comprehensive and balanced understanding of the events that led to the Partition of India in 1947.

According to the module, the Partition was not the result of the actions of a single person, but rather the outcome of decisions taken by three key players – Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who forcefully demanded Partition; the Congress leadership, which ultimately agreed to the division; and Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, who executed the process.

The updated content stresses that history must be taught with clarity, without creating oversimplified narratives or placing blame on one side. Instead, it explains how a combination of political demands, compromises, and administrative decisions shaped the course of India’s freedom and division.

The module also highlights the far-reaching consequences of Partition, particularly its role in making Kashmir a long-standing security challenge for India. The text notes that the Kashmir issue, born out of the Partition, continues to be exploited by certain foreign powers to maintain geopolitical pressure on India.
