New Delhi: As the Delhi Assembly elections approach, the Delhi Congress is making a strong push to appeal to Purvanchali voters by promising to create a dedicated government department aimed at addressing the needs of migrants from East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. With 35 lakh Purvanchali residents in Delhi, Congress leaders Supriya Shrinate and Kanhaiya Kumar emphasized their significant contribution to the city’s development while accusing the AAP and BJP of treating them merely as a vote bank.
Speaking at a joint press conference, Shrinate stated that a “Department for Purvanchalis” would ensure that the community’s needs are properly addressed. The proposal comes as pollsters predict that Purvanchali voters could impact election results in up to 45 seats out of the 70 Assembly segments in Delhi.
Kanhaiya Kumar, a prominent Congress leader and former JNU students’ union president, spoke out against the ill-treatment of Purvanchalis, despite their integral role in the city’s growth. “Delhi belongs to everyone, but often Purvanchalis are ill-treated even though they are offering services to build and run the city,” he said.
The Congress also unveiled its election manifesto, which Kanhaiya Kumar referred to as a “Congress Coupon.” He claimed that, if elected, the Congress would help middle-class families save up to Rs 10 lakh over the next five years. “A middle-class family can do so much with the savings of Rs 10 lakh in five years,” Kumar added. He criticized the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government for poor development and urged voters to support Congress for the city’s overall progress.
Kanhaiya Kumar also took aim at both the AAP and BJP, accusing them of working together behind the scenes. He reminded voters that the AAP originally emerged as an opposition force to the Congress. “When Arvind Kejriwal is fighting without joining hands with us, the onus is on him to prove who is fighting this election with,” he said.
