Mumbai: After considerable pressure from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on the eve of the budget session of the state legislature asked his Forest minister Sanjay Rathod to resign over charges of alleged abetment to suicide. After the resignation of former Sena Agriculture minister Shashikant Sutar way back in 1996, Rathod becomes the second Sena minister to do so. He is the third saffron party minister to have resigned in the last 25 years, that too from the Chief Ministers ruling party.
Despite all round criticism, pressure and adverse impact on the party, a rather unbending Rathod remarked that he had tendered his resignation as a minister and not as a member of the legislative assembly. Rathod even added that he was willing to step aside till the probe was held, making a case for his eventual re-entry into the state cabinet.
Faced with belligerent opposition and weighing the political costs of the clout enjoyed by Rathod in the Banjara community in Yavatmal district, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had to coerce his minister to step down. Leader of opposition in Legislative Assembly Devendra Fadnavis is sceptical of whether Thackeray would indeed accept Rathod’s resignation and forward it to the Governor for official acceptance.

The opposition has quite clearly indicated that it is in no mood to tone down its aggressive stand arguing that it wanted the registration for the First Information Report (FIR) and the arrest of Rathod.
Rathod is the second Sena minister after Shashikant Sutar’s resignation in 1996. Sutar was forced to resign as Agriculture minister following allegations of corruption in departmental transfers levelled by social activist Anna Hazare.
Along with Sutar BJP’s Mahadev Shivankar then Irrigation minister too was forced to resign. Late Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray was quick to sack Sutar. The Puranik Committee in its report had held Sutar guilty, while Shivankar was absolved of charges of corruption and reinstated in the then Sena chief minister Manohar Joshi’s cabinet. Another then BJP minister Shobhatai Fadnavis too had faced charges of corruption in the purchase of Tur dal, but was similarly absolved of the corruption charges.
Almost 20 years later in June 2016, number two in former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis’s cabinet, Eknath Khadse was forced to resign over allegations of corruption in a land deal in Pune district. Khadse was perceived more of a threat to the reign of Fadnavis and till the BJP-Sena government was voted out of office in 2019, Khadse was not able to clear his name and neither did he get to know of findings of the inquiry against him. A bitter Khadse finally quit the BJP and recently joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
