Mumbai: Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant has strongly condemned the omission of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s name from the newly inaugurated Worli Metro Station, officially listed by the Mumbai Metro Line 3 project as “Science Centre.”

In a sharp statement shared on social media, Sawant said the BJP government has deliberately dropped the ‘Nehru’ prefix from the station’s name despite the fact that the adjoining area has long been known as the Nehru Science Centre, one of Mumbai’s most prominent landmarks.

“Even in the official tweet by @MumbaiMetro3, the location is mentioned as Nehru Science Centre under the Discovery Hubs section. Yet the BJP’s allergy to the name Nehru has led to its deliberate omission,” Sawant alleged.

Calling the decision “highly objectionable” and an insult to the memory of India’s first Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sawant said the move was consistent with the BJP’s “petty and vindictive mindset” toward Nehru’s legacy.

He cited earlier instances, including the renaming of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in Delhi as the Prime Ministers’ Museum, the replacement of the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) with My Bharat, and the renaming of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad as the Narendra Modi Stadium.

“Pandit Nehru’s contribution to India’s scientific temper, industrial progress, and modern outlook is monumental. No matter how much the BJP despises him or tries to erase his legacy, such attempts will remain as futile as spitting at the sky,” Sawant stated.

The Congress leader demanded that the name of India’s first Prime Minister be immediately reinstated at the Worli Metro Station.

Sawant further said that the “world is watching how India’s founding fathers are being treated” and that the BJP’s actions are “not only erasing history but also tarnishing India’s dignity and global image.”

“We unequivocally condemn this disgraceful act,” he added.
