A major political controversy has erupted after the United States announced a 30-day waiver allowing India to purchase Russian oil, with leaders from the Indian National Congress accusing the government of compromising the country’s sovereignty.
The statement by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has triggered strong reactions from opposition leaders, who questioned why India would require approval from Washington to secure its own energy needs.

US Announces 30-Day Waiver for Indian Refiners
Posting on X, Bessent said the US Treasury Department is issuing a temporary waiver to allow Indian refiners to buy Russian crude oil in order to keep global oil supplies stable.
He said the decision aligns with the energy strategy of US President Donald Trump, which has pushed American oil and gas production to record levels.
According to Bessent, the waiver only allows transactions for oil shipments that are already stranded at sea, ensuring the move does not significantly benefit Russia financially.
He also described India as an important partner and said the US expects New Delhi to increase purchases of American oil in the future.
Congress Questions India’s Energy Sovereignty
The announcement quickly drew sharp criticism from Congress leaders who said the language used by US officials appeared patronising and disrespectful to India’s sovereignty.
Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala strongly criticised the government, asking why India should need permission from the US to buy oil from Russia.
He said that with rising global crude prices and potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, India must have the freedom to secure its energy supplies without external interference.
Surjewala also questioned the government’s silence on the issue, asking whether the leadership in New Delhi was defending India’s strategic interests effectively.
Manish Tewari Slams “Condescending” Language
Senior Congress leader Manish Tewari also criticised the tone of the US announcement.
Tewari said phrases such as “issuing a waiver” sounded condescending and reflective of neo-imperial thinking.
He argued that India, one of the world’s largest economies, should not need approval from any country to protect its energy security.
Tewari further criticised the government for not responding strongly to what he described as a challenge to India’s sovereignty.

The controversy is unfolding during a tense geopolitical moment following the reported sinking of the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena near the coast of Sri Lanka.
