Two days after widespread delays and disruptions at metro airports, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has unveiled a set of measures to address such situations in the future. The announcement comes in the wake of several flights facing delays and cancellations due to adverse weather conditions, particularly dense fog, affecting airports in major cities.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, January 16, Minister Scindia outlined the steps being taken to ensure immediate and effective responses to passenger inconvenience. Alongside the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Scindia revealed plans to establish “war rooms” at six metro airports.

The primary goal of these war rooms is to address passenger inconvenience promptly. Scindia emphasized the need for incidence reporting three times a day at all six metro airports to closely monitor and implement DGCA directives, SOPs, and CARs. Additionally, the government is committed to ensuring sufficient availability of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) manpower around the clock.

Providing further updates, Minister Scindia highlighted the operationalization of Delhi airport’s runway 29L as CAT III (Category III) operational, effective immediately. He also mentioned that the re-carpeting of runway 10/28 at Delhi Airport would be undertaken, subsequently making it CAT III operational.

The DGCA had recently issued new SOPs for airlines, granting them the authority to cancel flights likely to face delays beyond three hours due to adverse weather conditions. The SOPs emphasize the obligation of airlines to provide facilities to passengers affected by denied boarding, cancellations, or flight delays.

The move comes after Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport experienced significant disruptions, with hundreds of flights delayed and nearly 100 flights canceled due to dense fog and poor visibility. The ripple effect of these delays impacted airports across the country. The proactive measures announced by Minister Scindia aim to mitigate future challenges and enhance the overall efficiency and responsiveness of metro airports in handling adverse weather conditions.
