Chinese embassy in Brazil lashed out at Eduardo Bolsonaro when he suggested that Beijing’s companies offering 5G technology were carrying out spying operations for China’s leadership
New Delhi: In a shocking incident showcasing China’s aggression and a dearth of diplomatic decorum, Beijing’s embassy in Brazil has accused and targeted one of the sons of President Jair Bolsonaro, federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro, of seeking to undermine the relations between the two nations. The Chinese embassy lashed out at Eduardo Bolsonaro when he suggested that Chinese companies offering 5G technology were carrying out ‘spying for China.’
China’s diplomatic mission in the South American nation threatened that such allegations by Brazilian leaders could lead to ‘negative consequences’ for Brasilia, whose top trading partner for over a decade has been Beijing. The Chinese embassy, apart from such an unformal attack, also followed up with a formal complaint to the Brazilian Government through ‘diplomatic channels.’
According to sources, on November 24, the Chinese embassy reacted to the post uploaded by Eduardo Bolsonaro, a day earlier wherein he called Brazil’s ‘symbolic adherence’ to the so-called ‘clean network’ initiative of US President Donald Trump’s administration. This initiative sought to persuade foreign governments not to adopt Chinese 5G technology from Chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE.
In his post, Eduardo Bolsonaro had typed ‘The Jair Bolsonaro government declared support for the Clean Network alliance, launched by the Trump government, creating a global alliance for a secure 5G, without China’s espionage.’ He went on to identify the CPC-led Chinese Government as an ‘aggressive entity, an enemy of freedom.’ In its response to the comments, the Chinese embassy called the allegations by Eduardo Bolsonaro ‘infamous’ and ‘unfounded.’ It added that ‘serve to follow the dictates of the USA in the abusive use of the concept of national security to insult China and curtail the activities of Chinese companies.’
Supporting its attack on the Brazilian leadership, the Chinese diplomatic mission cited statistics highlighting the bilateral relations between the two countries. The embassy brandished trade numbers amounting to $58.4billon, or 33.5 percent of Brazil’s total exports with China.

This was China’s second attack on Eduardo Bolsonaro, who is President of the Foreign Relations and National Defence Committee of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies.
According to records, in the third week of March, the Chinese embassy in Brazil and its ambassador had publicly condemned a tweet posted by Eduardo Bolsonaro on March 18, wherein he held China responsible for the novel coronavirus pandemic and compared Beijing’s reaction with the Soviet Union’s botched response to the Chernobyl nuclear incident in 1986.
