Mumbai: Netflix’s upcoming Hindi film ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’, starring acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpayee, has landed in serious trouble after the Centre directed the streaming platform to remove its teaser and promotional material. The action follows a growing controversy over the film’s title, which critics allege is offensive and hurtful to a particular community.

The teaser of the film was unveiled recently as part of Netflix India’s 2026 content slate. However, soon after its release, the title triggered sharp reactions from political leaders, social organisations, and legal activists. Objections were raised claiming that the word “Ghooskhor” unfairly associates corruption with a traditionally respected social group, potentially harming social harmony.

Following multiple complaints, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting intervened and asked Netflix to take down the teaser from its platform as well as from other digital spaces. Government sources said the move was necessary to prevent escalation of tensions while the matter is examined further.

The controversy intensified when state authorities ordered the registration of a police case against the makers of the film and Netflix, citing allegations of hurting religious and caste sentiments. Legal notices were also issued demanding either a change in the title or a complete halt to the project’s release until concerns are addressed.

Responding to the backlash, the film’s creators clarified that ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’ is a fictional story and that the title refers to a character’s nickname rather than any community. They stated that there was no intention to insult or defame any group and expressed regret if sentiments were hurt unintentionally. Netflix, meanwhile, confirmed that it is cooperating with authorities and reviewing the issue internally.

Manoj Bajpayee also broke his silence, stating that the film does not target any religion or caste and focuses solely on individual moral conflicts within a fictional narrative. He appealed for the film to be judged only after its release and not based on assumptions drawn from the title alone.

The row has once again brought the spotlight on the delicate balance between creative freedom and social sensitivity in India’s digital entertainment space. As of now, Netflix has not announced whether the film’s title will be changed or if its scheduled release in 2026 will be impacted.
