Mumbai: Electoral politics and politics in general appears to have taken an insane turn both in the US and back home. While out-going US President Donald Trump is unwilling to accept the November 6 Presidential poll verdict, back in Bihar, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejasvi Yadav could not exactly live up to his tag of being Joe Biden of Bihar. Both are sounding more like sore losers blaming the election machinery of electoral fraud. As against this the cloak and dagger war between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Shiv Sena seems to have taken a turn for the worse.
This has now become an accepted new norm especially in democracies that the loser looks to find excuses where none exist. Instead of accepting the peoples verdict with grace and humility the new norm is to question and attack the electoral process itself. The system which was nurtured over the years assiduously suddenly turns devilish just as you find things are not exactly going your way.
Till the time the pollsters predict a rosy, utopian, surreal picture for you, the same system appears brutal and heartless. But no one wants to pay any attention that the voters have given their verdict and its time that one reads the writing on the wall and gets its act together and regain that lost public confidence. Both have threatened to drag the elections to the court of law, Trump at least has failed in his attempts so far. The RJD has just threatened to do so.
There can be room for, or scope for improvements, reforms in the electoral system and democracy in general. But surely one cannot allow attempts to reinvent the wheel or go back to the stone-age. Or have alliances like those in Jammu and Kashmir that threaten to reverse the clock. Of-course the authorities that be need to lay the apprehensions and concerns to rest and be proactive in addressing them rather than wait for things to go out of control.
What is interesting to note here is that in the US for almost three days there was no clear winner amidst claims of voter fraud and a seriously flawed electoral system that could not pinpoint a winner. In contrast, in Bihar, although it has been a hung verdict, an pre-poll alliance has been a clear winner. Our electoral system appears to be far more robust and mature along with its pitfalls.
In Maharashtra though, things appear to be spinning out of control. The cloak and dagger game going on between the BJP and its one-time ally the Sena is heading for worse things in days to come. More than tackling the Covid-19 pandemic, reviving the economy, what is being dished out is courtroom battles, shrill television studio debates, muck being thrown at each other, all of which are of no interest to the common man who wants to know the cure for the pandemic and that he gets along with life.
Time and again the electorate has put their electoral masters on notice. The results in US and in Bihar are a grim reminder to that effect. Both have been close races in the end. The electorate has given a strong opposition and a message to that opposition to get its act together and those in power to be responsible.
For those in power, they cannot hope and expect to get away with bending the system as per their wish. Any attempts could only undermine our democracy and public faith in it. Those intoxicated by power and who feel that they have the remote control of the levers of power have been served a grim warning to reign in their In-Sanity or else run the risk of being consigned to the desolate political wilderness.
