The Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka has confirmed the registration of a case against Tejasvi Surya, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate for Bengaluru South, for allegedly soliciting votes on religious grounds. The case, filed under Section 123(3) of the law, was lodged at the Jayanagar Police Station following a video posted by Surya on a social media platform.

In the video, Surya showcased the ‘Surya Tilak’ being performed at the Ayodhya Ram Mandir while urging voters to support the BJP. The caption accompanying the post read, “Our generation was blessed to witness the majestic Surya Tilak on Bhagwan Shri Ram at Ayodhya on Ram Navami. A wait for almost 500 years & a wish of crores of Bharatiyas was fulfilled by PM Shri @narendramodi Ji. For Bharatiyata to survive, vote for BJP!”

The move to register a case against Surya comes amidst heightened scrutiny of election campaigns and a strict adherence to the model code of conduct. The Election Commission of India has been vigilant in ensuring that candidates refrain from making appeals based on religion, caste, or other divisive factors.

Tejasvi Surya, currently serving as a Member of Parliament from Bengaluru South, is a key figure in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections’ second phase. He faces a formidable challenge from Sowmyam Reddy of the Congress in the constituency.
