Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has come out in strong support of stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra amid the controversy over his satirical song mocking Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor). Thackeray dismissed the backlash against Kamra, stating that there was nothing wrong in calling a traitor what they truly are.
“I don’t think Kunal Kamra said anything wrong. Calling a ‘gaddar’ a ‘gaddar’ is not an attack on anyone. Listen to the full song and let others hear it too,” Thackeray told reporters. The former Maharashtra CM also took a direct jab at the Shinde faction, referring to them as “gaddar sena” and stating that the vandalism at Kamra’s show venue was the work of traitors, not true Shiv Sainiks.
The controversy erupted after Kamra performed a parody song referencing Shinde’s 2022 defection that led to the Shiv Sena split. The act enraged Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) supporters, who stormed and vandalized Habitat Comedy Club in Khar, the venue where Kamra’s show was filmed.
Shiv Sena UBT leader Priyanka Chaturvedi also extended her support to Kamra, posting on X: “Dear Kunal, stay strong. And like Voltaire said—’I will defend to death your right to speak your mind’.”
As the political slugfest escalates, Thackeray’s remarks have further fueled tensions between the warring Shiv Sena factions, with Kamra’s satire now at the center of Maharashtra’s ongoing political battle.
