New Delhi: A Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report on the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), presented by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in the Assembly on Monday, has revealed severe operational inefficiencies and financial losses, sparking sharp criticism of the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
The report highlights key issues in fleet management, revenue generation, and overall operational sustainability, raising concerns about the alleged mismanagement of Delhi’s public transport system under AAP’s rule.
Following the release of the CAG report, BJP MLA Harish Khurana launched a scathing attack on AAP, alleging that the government had failed to fulfill its promises regarding public transport. He pointed out that while AAP pledged to introduce 11,000 new buses between 2013 and 2015, the number of DTC buses instead decreased from 4,344 in 2015 to 3,937.
Khurana further claimed that under former Chief Minister Madan Lal Khurana, DTC had been profitable, but during AAP’s tenure, financial losses soared to ₹8,498.33 crore—an increase of ₹5,000 crore.
Highlighting declining revenues, he stated that DTC’s operating income fell from ₹914 crore when AAP came to power to just ₹558 crore. Additionally, he accused the AAP government of financial irregularities, questioning why it allotted 3.18 lakh square meters of DTC land to private cluster buses without collecting ₹225 crore in rent.
The BJP leader also criticized the Kejriwal-led administration for failing to procure new buses despite having ₹223 crore allocated in 2022 for the Delhi Transport Department. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention for providing electric buses to Delhi, while noting that 1,770 CNG buses had exceeded their operational lifespan but were not replaced under AAP’s governance.
The Delhi Assembly Budget Session, which began on March 24 and will continue until March 28, marks an important milestone for the BJP-led government, which returned to power after 27 years in the 2025 Delhi Legislative Assembly election. During this session, CM Rekha Gupta also tabled two CAG reports scrutinizing the now-scrapped excise policy and Delhi’s healthcare system, further intensifying the political battle between BJP and AAP.
