New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced by-elections for five key assembly constituencies across four states, setting the stage for a fresh political contest just weeks after the general elections. The seats going to polls are Kadi and Visavadar in Gujarat, Nilambur in Kerala, Ludhiana West in Punjab, and Kaliganj in West Bengal.

With the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect in all the constituencies. Voting will take place on June 19, and the counting of votes is scheduled for June 23, the ECI said in its official release.

The poll body also clarified the reasons behind the vacancies that have necessitated the by-elections, though further details about the nature of these vacancies were not specified in the press note.

In a bid to ensure transparency and efficiency, the Commission will deploy Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs) across all polling booths. The ECI confirmed that a sufficient number of EVMs and VVPATs has already been secured and will be used in all five constituencies.

These by-elections are being closely monitored as they are expected to serve as an early indicator of the political undercurrents in Gujarat, Kerala, Punjab, and West Bengal in the aftermath of the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. Political observers believe the outcome could influence party strategies and leadership decisions ahead of upcoming state polls.
