In the heart of Pakistan’s breathtaking Gilgit-Baltistan region, a remarkable movement is changing lives. Every year, young girls from remote mountain villages gather to play in the Gilgit-Baltistan Girls Football League, an all-female football tournament that is breaking barriers and challenging traditions. In a society where women’s participation in sports is often discouraged, this league has become a symbol of empowerment, resilience, and hope.

A Dream That Became a Reality

The league was founded in 2018 by two sisters, Karishma and Sumaira Inayat, who grew up in the region and understood the challenges faced by girls who wanted to play sports. In many conservative parts of Pakistan, young girls are expected to stay at home, focus on household duties, and follow strict cultural norms. Playing football, or any sport, is seen as something only boys should do.

However, Karishma and Sumaira refused to accept these restrictions. With their determination and love for the game, they started the first-ever football league for girls in the region. Their goal was simple but powerful: to create a safe space where young girls could play, dream, and believe in themselves.

Overcoming Challenges

The journey has not been easy. The founders and players have faced opposition from some members of their community, who believe that football is not a suitable sport for girls. In the early days, parents were hesitant to allow their daughters to participate, fearing criticism and social backlash.

Despite these challenges, the league continued to grow. With each passing year, more girls joined, proving that the desire to play and compete was stronger than the fear of judgment. Today, the league has become a platform for over 100 girls aged 14 to 21, allowing them to showcase their talent and determination.

More Than Just a Game

For these young players, football is not just a sport; it is a way to reclaim their freedom and identity. Many of the girls come from backgrounds where they have limited opportunities for education and career choices. Through football, they learn important life skills—teamwork, discipline, confidence, and leadership.

The impact of the league goes beyond the football field. Several girls who played in the tournament have gone on to pursue higher education and sports careers. Karishma, one of the founders, is now pursuing a master’s degree in sports management in Paris, proving that dreams can come true, no matter where you come from.

Inspiring a Generation

The success of the Gilgit-Baltistan Girls Football League is inspiring more young girls across Pakistan to step into the world of sports. It has shown that with courage and determination, it is possible to break stereotypes and challenge societal norms.

As the league continues to grow, its message remains clear: girls have the right to dream, to play, and to choose their path. Football, once seen as a boys’ game, is now a source of empowerment for young girls in Pakistan’s remote mountains.

In a world that often limits their choices, these girls have found freedom on the football field. And with every goal they score, they are not just winning a game—they are winning their fight for equality and self-belief.
