Jammu: In another solemn chapter of Operation Sindoor, the Border Security Force (BSF) has lost a second braveheart, Constable Deepak Chingakham, who succumbed to injuries sustained during cross-border firing by Pakistan Rangers in the RS Pura sector of Jammu on the intervening night of May 9 and 10.

The BSF confirmed his passing on Sunday, paying tribute to the fallen soldier. “DG BSF and All Ranks salute the supreme sacrifice made by Constable Deepak Chingakham in the line of duty. He was injured in cross-border fire by Pakistan on 10th May 2025 along the International Boundary in RS Pura area, Jammu. He succumbed to his injuries today on 11th May 2025. Prahari Pariwar stands firm with the bereaved family in these trying times,” read an official post on X (formerly Twitter).

A wreath-laying ceremony with full military honours is scheduled for Monday at the BSF’s frontier headquarters in Jammu. Deepak, a native of Manipur, was praised across the nation, with tributes pouring in for his valor and sacrifice.

Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed his grief, stating, “He was a proud son of Manipur, and as a Meitei, his courage and dedication to the nation reflect the deep sense of duty that lives within so many of our people.”

Deepak’s passing comes just a day after Sub-Inspector Mohammed Imteyaz of the BSF’s 7th Battalion succumbed to injuries from heavy shelling on May 10. Imteyaz was laid to rest on Sunday in Jammu with full military honours. His final rites are set to be performed in his native village, Narayanpur, in Bihar’s Saran district.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also extended his condolences, calling Imteyaz’s sacrifice “a matter of pride for the nation.” The CM’s office confirmed that an ex-gratia compensation, in line with state policy, would be given to his family.

These tragic incidents unfolded amid heightened hostilities following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists. In retaliation, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting and dismantling at least nine terror infrastructure sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

So far, Operation Sindoor has included precision military strikes and coordinated responses by India’s armed forces to Pakistani provocations.
