Mumbai:  The Conservation Education Centre (CEC) of the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) is offering free online sessions on environmental science for students from Class V- IX. These sessions will be in tandem with the syllabus of the NCERT and the Maharashtra state board and will be conducted in English and Marathi. Students will be taught various topics through multimedia educational PowerPoint presentations with videos, documentaries, photographs and illustrations explained through by the BNHS’ own trained education officers.

Free technical assistance sessions for school teachers on how to use technology for education is also available. “Creating environmental awareness is part of our duty, which we normally do by undertaking nature trails, bird watching trips, butterfly trails and other such activities. The lockdown has clamped our outdoor and physical activities, though we do host webinars online. We realised that in these times, it would be a good way to reach out to students through schools as part of their school curriculum,” says Dr Raju Kasambe, the BNHS’s assistant director (education).

The BNHS will stick to its areas of core competence, namely Environmental Science and has listed out a series of topics based on the chapters of school curriculum. Schools and teachers can decide on the topics for the students and coordinate the effort to get BNHS onboard their online platforms. The BNHS’s team of four education officers and two managers hope to reach out to over 15,000 students across the country through this initiative.

About 120 schools across the country have already registered for these sessions so far. Various talks and webinars of BNHS webinars are available for viewing on its YouTube channel as also on the YouTube channel of Dr Raju Kasambe.

Schools need to mail the CEC, Mumbai on cec-mumbai@bnhs.org and education@bnhs.org or register via Google Form on https://forms.gle/BaMnttdAdLFKHgf8A to participate in this.
