Mumbai: With Diwali just around the corner, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has called on residents to prioritize safety and environmental responsibility during the festivities. The civic body released a set of guidelines encouraging Mumbaikars to celebrate the festival in a manner that reduces fire hazards, noise, and air pollution.

The advisory specifically warns against bursting firecrackers near residential buildings, trees, overhead electrical wires, and gas pipelines. It also emphasizes that children should be supervised by adults at all times when handling fireworks.

A spokesperson from the BMC fire department said, “We urge citizens to take precautions while celebrating Diwali. Simple steps like wearing cotton clothing, keeping a bucket of water nearby, and ensuring safe distances from potential hazards can prevent accidents.”

For emergencies, residents are advised to contact the fire and rescue services at 101 or 1916. The civic body also discouraged lighting crackers in staircases or enclosed areas and cautioned against using open flames such as lighters for ignition.

The BMC is promoting eco-friendly Diwali celebrations, asking citizens to minimize the use of noisy and polluting fireworks and instead focus on lighting lamps and decorations safely. “Celebrating Diwali safely ensures that everyone can enjoy the festival of lights without unnecessary risks to life, property, or the environment,” the statement read.
