Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed the construction of the Mumbai Eye, a massive Ferris wheel, as part of its 2025-26 budget. The proposal aims to create a major tourist attraction similar to the iconic London Eye, which has become a hallmark of London’s skyline. Despite several unsuccessful attempts over the past 15 years by various agencies to establish a similar structure in the city, the BMC is determined to bring the vision to life.

The Mumbai Eye is expected to be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model at a yet-to-be-decided location. Modeled after the famous London Eye — a 135-meter (443-foot) Ferris wheel on the River Thames — the Mumbai Eye would feature air-conditioned, sealed passenger capsules, each holding 25 people. The rotating wheel would offer visitors an elevated view of the city and provide panoramic vistas of Mumbai’s sprawling skyline.

The concept of a Mumbai Eye was first introduced by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) in 2011 but failed to materialize. The idea was revived in 2023 by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which proposed the Bandra Reclamation promenade as the location. However, the plan faced opposition from residents in the area, who raised concerns about increased traffic congestion and environmental restrictions. This led to the scrapping of the project by the MMRDA.

Now, with BMC stepping in to revive the proposal, the Mumbai Eye could be the city’s third attempt at bringing a similar structure to life. The London Eye, known as the Millennium Wheel, has inspired the creation of several other Ferris wheels in major tourist destinations globally.
