New Delhi: In a significant political boost ahead of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delivered a strong performance in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) bypolls by securing 7 out of 12 seats, reaffirming its organisational strength in the capital’s civic politics. The results were announced shortly after the vote counting commenced at 8 am on Wednesday, bringing a decisive end to the closely watched contest.

The BJP registered victories in Dwarka B, Vinod Nagar, Ashok Vihar, Greater Kailash, Dichaon Kalan, Shalimar Bagh B and Chandni Chowk, showcasing a mixed pattern of urban and semi-urban support. However, the party suffered setbacks in Sangam Vihar A and Naraina, both of which it had won during the 2022 MCD elections, signalling areas where local dynamics may have shifted.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which currently governs Delhi, secured three wards — Naraina, Mundka and Dakshinpuri. Despite a visible decline from its 2022 performance, AAP leaders maintained that the bypolls do not reflect the larger political climate ahead of assembly elections later this year.

The Congress, which has been attempting to revive its presence in Delhi’s political landscape, clinched a solitary win in Sangam Vihar A, while the AIFB (All India Forward Bloc) made a surprise entry with Mohammad Imran winning the Chandni Mahal ward, marking a rare non-BJP, non-AAP victory.

This by-election was viewed as an important test for all major parties as a total of 51 candidates, including 26 women, contested across 12 wards—Greater Kailash, Shalimar Bagh B, Ashok Vihar, Chandni Chowk, Chandni Mahal, Dichaon Kalan, Naraina, Sangam Vihar A, Dakshin Puri, Mundka, Vinod Nagar, and Dwarka B.

In the last full-scale MCD elections held in 2022, AAP had secured a significant victory with 134 seats and 42.05% vote share, while the BJP stronghold remained intact with 104 seats and 39.09% vote share. The 2025 bypoll outcome, however, signals a tighter battle brewing between the two major contenders as Delhi heads into an election-heavy year.
