Delhi: A fresh political controversy erupted on Tuesday after All India Congress Committee (AICC) spokesperson Ragini Nayak reshared an AI-generated video depicting Prime Minister Narendra Modi serving tea with a kettle and cups. The clip, posted on X with the caption “ab ye kaun kiya?” triggered immediate backlash from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which accused the Congress of once again targeting the Prime Minister’s humble background.

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla strongly condemned the post, alleging that the Congress leadership continues to harbour what he called an “elitist mindset” against Modi. In a detailed statement, he said the resurfacing of such mockery reflects the party’s long-standing discomfort with a leader who rose from an economically modest upbringing.

Poonawalla wrote, “After Renuka Choudhary’s behaviour in Parliament, now Ragini Nayak mocks the Prime Minister’s chaiwala roots. The Congress cannot tolerate a hardworking OBC Prime Minister from a poor family. They mocked him earlier, insulted him over 150 times, and even abused his mother. The people will not forget this.”

The BJP leader also referenced a separate recent controversy during the Congress’ ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar, where a video — widely circulated on social media — allegedly captured derogatory remarks about the Prime Minister’s mother. Though the authenticity of that clip remains unverified, it added further tension between the two parties amid ongoing political exchanges.

The controversy unfolded just days after the BJP secured the largest vote share in the Bihar Assembly polls, paving the way for the NDA’s return to power and Nitish Kumar taking oath as Chief Minister for the tenth time. Congress, meanwhile, recorded a notably weak performance in the state.

This renewed clash also revives the political debate around Modi’s early life, a subject the Congress has questioned before. In earlier years, senior leader Ahmed Patel had claimed that the Prime Minister was not a tea-seller but worked as a canteen contractor — remarks the BJP had slammed as an attack on Modi’s identity and struggles.
