The Delhi Congress has announced its list of candidates for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, setting the stage for some high-profile contests in the national capital. Among the notable candidates is Kanhaiya Kumar, who will be pitted against two-time MP and actor Manoj Tiwari in the North-East Delhi constituency, in what is being seen as a “Bihari vs Bihari” clash and a calculated move by the Congress party to disrupt the BJP’s support base.
With both Kanhaiya Kumar and Manoj Tiwari hailing from Bihar, the contest in the North-East Delhi seat has taken on an interesting dimension, transcending the traditional BJP vs Congress narrative. Political analysts suggest that this fight has become a clash between two Bihari leaders vying for the support of the significant Bihari and Purvanchal voter base in the constituency.
The North-East Delhi constituency is closely linked to Uttar Pradesh, with a substantial population comprising migrants from Bihar, Haryana, and the Purvanchal region. Experts believe that Manoj Tiwari’s victories in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections were largely due to the support he garnered from these voter groups.

By fielding Kanhaiya Kumar, a prominent Bihari face, against Manoj Tiwari, the Congress is seen to have made a strategic political move aimed at disrupting the BJP’s support base in the constituency. If the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) votes, along with those of the Purvanchal and Bihari communities, consolidate behind Kanhaiya Kumar, he could pose a formidable challenge to the incumbent MP.
“This is a calculated move by the Congress to cut into the BJP’s vote bank in North-East Delhi,” said political analyst Rajiv Sharma. “By positioning Kanhaiya Kumar as the ‘Bihari challenger’ to Manoj Tiwari, the party is hoping to create a divide within the Bihari and Purvanchal communities, which have traditionally supported the BJP.”
