Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has alleged that a senior Congress MP from the state visited Pakistan secretly, triggering a serious investigation by the state police. Speaking to the media, Sarma said the Member of Parliament spent 15 days in Islamabad without informing either the Assam government or the Centre.

“An important functionary of the Congress Parliamentary Party, who is an MP from Assam, spent 15 days in Islamabad without informing the Assam government or the Government of India. He went to Pakistan through the Attari border,” Sarma said, without naming the MP. He confirmed that the matter is being probed by a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Sarma further revealed that investigators have discovered key evidence, including financial links between the MP’s wife and Pakistan. “We have found some important evidence that the MP’s wife used to get salary from Pakistan for three years. She was working in Delhi, but her salary used to come from Pakistan,” he added.

The Chief Minister stated that the SIT is scheduled to meet the MP and his family in June or July to record their statements, and the final report will be submitted by September.
