In a bold forecast, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has foreseen a bleak future for the Congress party, predicting its eventual fragmentation into various regional entities following the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Conversely, he expressed confidence in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), asserting a sweeping victory of over 400 seats.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Sarma asserted, “Congress is bound to be history. Congress will be segregated into various regional parties. The national status of Congress will diminish after this election because the NDA is heading to a 400-plus victory…There is no option.”

Sarma further elaborated on the purported demoralization within the Congress ranks, alleging a lack of cohesive national leadership. “The workers will be completely demoralized. Congress will be segregated, there will be no national leadership and Congress will be fragmented into a state regional organization,” he emphasized.

Having defected from the Congress to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2015, Sarma has escalated his criticism of the Gandhi family, which holds sway over the Congress.

Recently, Sarma announced his party’s alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) for the forthcoming general elections. Under this arrangement, the BJP will contest in 11 out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, with the AGP and UPPL vying for two and one seat, respectively.

In a further blow to the Congress, Assam Congress working president Rana Goswami defected to the BJP, joining a growing list of party members aligning with the state government. Another working president of Assam Congress, Kamakhya Dey Purkayastha, also threw his support behind the ruling coalition.

The exodus of prominent figures from the Congress camp underscores the shifting political landscape in Assam, with Sarma’s prophecy of the party’s fragmentation adding to the prevailing uncertainty surrounding its future prospects.

As the Lok Sabha elections loom closer, the political landscape in Assam appears poised for seismic shifts, with Sarma’s predictions setting the stage for a potentially transformative electoral showdown.
