Assam Government Completes Cabinet Portfolio Distribution
Days after expanding his Council of Ministers, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has finalized the allocation of portfolios, laying out the administrative structure that will guide the state’s governance in the coming years.
The announcement comes after the swearing-in of 12 new ministers, marking the next phase of government formation following the NDA’s commanding electoral success in the state.
Sarma Retains Core Power Ministries
The chief minister has chosen to keep several of the government’s most influential departments under his direct supervision.
These include Home, Political Affairs, Public Works, Power, and Information and Public Relations. In addition, departments that have not been specifically assigned to other ministers will continue to remain under the chief minister’s charge.
Announcing the allocations, Sarma stated on X, “With the approval of the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, I am pleased to announce the allocation of portfolios amongst the members of the Council of Ministers of the Government of Assam.”
Education And Health Remain With Senior Faces
The reshuffle has ensured continuity in crucial social sectors, with senior ministers retaining departments they previously handled.
Ranoj Pegu will continue overseeing the Education Department, while Ashok Singhal remains responsible for Health and Family Welfare along with Medical Education and Research, maintaining stability in two of the state’s most important policy areas.
Finance And Industry Portfolios Assigned
Jayanta Malla Baruah has been entrusted with the Finance Department, placing him at the centre of the state’s economic planning and fiscal management.
Meanwhile, Bimal Borah has been assigned a broad set of responsibilities that include Industries, Commerce, Public Enterprises, Cultural Affairs and Act East Policy Affairs, making him one of the key ministers in charge of Assam’s economic and investment agenda.
Cabinet Expansion Follows Electoral Landslide
The portfolio distribution follows a decisive mandate delivered by voters in the recently concluded Assembly elections.
The Bharatiya Janata Party secured 82 seats in the 126-member Assembly, while the NDA alliance collectively crossed the 100-seat mark with 102 victories. The Congress, in contrast, recorded its weakest-ever performance in the state, managing only 19 seats.
