Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) President and former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday demanded an absolute farm loan waiver for farmers affected by the devastating floods in Maharashtra, while also urging reconsideration of the India-Pakistan Asia Cup final scheduled for Sunday.

Speaking to reporters, Thackeray emphasized, “We have two urgent demands – a complete farm loan waiver and immediate financial support of Rs 50,000 per hectare, similar to the Punjab model.” He recalled that during his tenure as chief minister, his government had successfully implemented a farm loan waiver and called on the current administration to act swiftly.

Thackeray also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide at least Rs 50,000 crore as immediate relief from the PM CARES fund. “The Prime Minister recently deposited Rs 10,000 into the accounts of 75 lakh women in Bihar ahead of elections. Meanwhile, Maharashtra, which voted for the government, is suffering without adequate support,” he said.

Official estimates indicate that over 50 lakh hectares of farmland have been damaged by the recent incessant rains. Farmers in affected districts are awaiting clarity on relief measures, and the opposition has criticized the state government for delays in implementing aid. Thackeray criticized the BJP, stating, “If asking for justice and relief for farmers is considered political, then we will continue to do it.”

On the India-Pakistan Asia Cup final, Thackeray urged the public and sponsors to reconsider their support. “It is regrettable that Sonam Wangchuk, who contributed to the Indian Army through innovative solar tents, is being arrested under the NSA. Meanwhile, Pakistan, which spreads terrorism in India, is playing a cricket match with us. Sponsors, who benefit from India, should take note of this,” he said.
