In a dramatic turn of events, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), known for its staunch stance on leaders facing allegations, finds itself embroiled in controversy as it rallies behind Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, currently in Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody.
The party, which once advocated for leaders to step down amidst allegations to ensure a fair investigation, is now steadfastly defending Kejriwal, despite his legal woes.
Reports have emerged that Kejriwal, despite being confined within the walls of the ED lock-up, has not shied away from his duties. In a remarkable move, he issued directives pertaining to water supply in the national capital, signaling his intent to continue governance from behind bars.
Delhi Minister Atishi, who received the directives from Kejriwal, expressed astonishment at the Chief Minister’s resolve, stating, “Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has issued his first direction from ED custody. The directions were issued to me, the Water Minister. This brought tears to my eyes. How can a person – who has been arrested – think about the people of Delhi in such a difficult period?”
Kejriwal’s detention stems from allegations linked to a money laundering case associated with Delhi’s liquor policy, a policy that has since been annulled. Despite fervent denials from Kejriwal and AAP, accusations persist, with the party attributing them to political vendettas orchestrated by the BJP-led central government.
AAP leadership remains resolute in its support for Kejriwal, affirming that he will continue in his role as Chief Minister. However, navigating the constraints of incarceration presents significant challenges. Prison regulations permit only limited interactions with the outside world, hindering Kejriwal’s ability to discharge his duties effectively.
While the option of house arrest exists, contingent upon approval from the Lieutenant Governor, its feasibility remains uncertain. With the situation evolving rapidly, AAP finds itself at a crossroads, grappling with accusations of hypocrisy while steadfastly standing by its embattled leader.
