Mumbai: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s persistent demand for a caste-based census—rooted in the principle of “proportional representation as per population”—has finally compelled the BJP government to concede. Now, the central government must announce a time-bound program for the caste census and implement it along the lines of the Telangana and Karnataka models, demanded Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Harshvardhan Sapkal at a press conference held at Tilak Bhavan today.

Sapkal emphasized that a caste-based census is more than just a numerical exercise—it is a vital step toward social justice. “In Maharashtra, the OBC population could be far higher than the existing estimate of 27%, possibly reaching up to 64%. This census will offer clarity on the actual population of various communities and help resolve long-pending demands for reservation, including those of the Maratha, Patidar, and Gurjar communities,” he said.

He credited Rahul Gandhi for forcing the BJP government to accept the need for such a census through consistent advocacy. “The Modi government had no choice but to act due to Rahul Gandhi’s determined push. Now, it is the government’s responsibility to train officials on proper data collection methods and ensure transparent implementation,” Sapkal added.
