Mumbai: Amidst continuing internal turmoil, Shiv Sena Lok Sabha MP Rahul Shewale has written to party chief Uddhav Thackeray urging him to support the candidature of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Presidential nominee Draupadi Murmu.
He said that Draupadi Murmu comes from a tribal community and her contribution to the social sector is immense.
He recalled that in the past when Shiv Sena was in alliance with the BJP, party patriarch late Balasaheb Thackeray had rejected support for NDA’s presidential nominee and had instead supported the candidature of Congress led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) presidential nominee Pratibha Patil, who hailed from Maharashtra. Citing a second such instance, he said, the Sena founder had also supported another UPA presidential nominee Pranab Mukherjee.
Shewale said that considering the background of Draupadi Murmu and her significant contribution to the social sector, he requested Thackeray to extend support to NDA’s Presidential nominee. He also asked his party chief to issue directions to the Sena MPs to vote for Draupadi Murmu.
Election to elect the 16th President of India will be held on July 18 and counting of votes will be held in New Delhi on July 21. Draupadi Murmu of the BJP led NDA is pitted against UPA candidate Yashwant Sinha. The term of office of current President of India, Ram Nath Kovind is due to end on July 24.
