Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court Bar Association has strongly opposed the Supreme Court Collegium’s decision to transfer Justice Yashwant Verma back to the Allahabad High Court after reports emerged of ₹15 crore cash being found at his Delhi residence following a fire incident.
In a scathing letter to the Chief Justice and other judges of the Allahabad High Court, the Bar Association criticized the transfer, stating that the Allahabad High Court is not a “trash bin” for judges under suspicion. The association further raised concerns over the SC Collegium’s appointment process, alleging that it has eroded public faith in the judiciary.

“Today, we were taken aback that the Hon’ble Supreme Court has transferred Hon’ble Justice Yashwant Verma back to Allahabad High Court on the ground of his involvement in corruption, wherein a sum of ₹15 crores was found in his bungalow by the fire department. Newspapers have reported this fact on the front page,” the association said in its letter.
The lawyers further questioned the credibility of judicial appointments, emphasizing that despite a shortage of judges in the Allahabad High Court, qualified candidates from the Bar have not been appointed. They also alleged that eligibility criteria for judges appear to be compromised, leading to concerns about corruption.
“Something is lacking, which has resulted in corruption and, consequently, great damage to the ‘public faith in the judiciary,'” the letter read.
Amid the growing controversy, reports indicate that the Supreme Court has initiated an in-house inquiry against Justice Yashwant Verma to probe the allegations.
