Mumbai: Former Maharashtra minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray has strongly criticized the BJP-led central government for their “impractical guidelines” for Bulk Water Suppliers, which have contributed to the ongoing strike by the Mumbai Water Tanker Association (MWTA). The strike has raised concerns as it comes at a time when the city faces a surge in water demand during the peak season.
Taking to social media platform X, Aaditya highlighted the impact of the strike, saying, “The Mumbai Water Tanker Association has called for a strike, and during this peak season of additional water demand, many residential housing societies, large buildings, commercial offices, and businesses are going to be hit.”

The MWTA has been protesting the Central Ground Water Authority’s guidelines for Bulk Water Suppliers, which they argue are unworkable and detrimental to the city’s water supply system. The issue, according to Aaditya, has been pending for three years, with the state government failing to take it up with the central authorities.
“Today, Mumbaikars will suffer because of certain impractical guidelines made by those sitting in government of India offices in Delhi,” Aaditya criticized, emphasizing the urgent need for a practical solution to address the water crisis.
Aaditya further urged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner to hold a press conference to inform Mumbaikars about the corporation’s plans to address the water shortages.
He also pointed out that if Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had not cancelled the Desalination plant project proposed by the previous Mahayuti government, Mumbai’s water woes would have been alleviated by 2026.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Water Tanker Association has announced the indefinite suspension of water supply services across the city. The decision to halt services came in retaliation after the BMC issued notices to private well owners selling water to tanker operators.
