Mumbai: Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) constituents Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Wednesday have slammed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the mid-night cremation of the 19 year old Hathras gang-rape victim. Minority Affairs Minister and NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik went to the extent of remarking that if Prime Minister Narendra Modi has indeed felt sad about the incident then he should seek the resignation of the UP Chief Minister and dismiss the Bharatiya Janata Party government in UP.

State NCP president and Minister for Water Resources Jayant Patil termed the mid-night cremation of the dalit gang-rape victim as inhuman and one that does not behove of the Yogi government. Taking a swipe at UP CM’s recent announcement of constructing a museum in honour of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, he said that Yogi government does not have the right to take the name of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj if he cannot create a state based on equality, respect and justice.

In a tweet, Patil expressed outrage over the mid-night cremation of the victim’s body in the absence of the family members of the victim and termed it as inhuman and one that does not behove of the government. He added that girl was denied dignity while she was alive and neither was she given a dignified cremation in death.

State NCP spokesperson and Minority Affairs Minister Nawab Malik in his reaction remarked that there was no rule of law prevailing in Uttar Pradesh. In his reaction, he added that if indeed Prime Minister Narendra Modi has felt grief over the Hathras incident then he (PM) should take the resignation of CM Yogi Adityanath and dismiss the BJP government.

He added that there is no rule of law left in UP and that it is a government only meant for people special to CM Yogi Adityanath. Malik further remarked that Yogi is a saintly man, but is ruling the state like a king which is dangerous for democracy. The NCP spokespersons further commented that the way the UP CM is governing the state, it seems that his aides have been given a free reign.

First the incident was tried to be brushed off as fake news, arguing that such a thing did not happen at all, then hurriedly cremated the girl in the dead of the night shows that there is no rule of law left in UP. Malik argued that just like in the Unnao case as attempts were made to shield Kuldeep Sengar, so like this case there are many more such cases in UP, the government is trying to treat those involved in the same manner.

Deputy Chief Minister and senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar demanded strictest possible action against the accused. He added that those who have perpetrated such a horrific crime should meet with full force of the law which is even in greater force than the crime they have committed. He added that the Hathras incident should prove to be the last one in the country.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president and Revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat termed the Hathras incident as a blot on humanity. He added that it is shocking that the family of the victim was denied the right to cremate the mortal remains of their daughter. Thorat added that women and girls are no longer safe in UP.

Meanwhile, reacting to the incident Union Minister for Social Justice, Ramdas Athawale while terming the incident as a blot on the face of humanity, he demanded that the death penalty be awarded to the accused and a trial in a fast track court. Athawale announced that he would be calling on the family of the victim on October 2. The Republican Party of India (Athawale faction) cadres will stage a protest demonstration at partys Azad Maidan office on October 1, he added.
