Mumbai: Following incessant heavy downpour in and around Mumbai by Tuesday late evening at around 9.30 pm, the Modak Sagar dam started over flowing. This prompted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) open the floodgates of the Modak Sagar dam on Wednesday. The water level in all the seven lakes has increased beyond 85 per cent. Last year the dam was full by July 26. Tulsi and Vihar lakes, which are located within the city limits, have already filled up. BMC has announced that now only 10 per cent water cut will be imposed which was earlier announced at 20 per cent.
For an entire year the city requires 14, 47,363 Million Liters per Day (MLD) of water to quench the thirst of the city. Keeping in mind the shortage of water accumulated in the lakes due to less rainfall in June and mid-July. On August 5 BMC had announced 20 per cent water cut, but on Wednesday it was reduced to 10 per cent considering the increased water level in the reservoirs.

But due to the incessant rainfall in the catchment areas, the current level of water in the reservoir has increased to 85 per cent of the total capacity of water requirement in the city. Currently, the dams have 85 % that is 12, 32,302 MLD of water in the reservoir that is just 2, 15,062 MLD of water left to meet the total requirements of the city.
With good rainfall in August, the seven dams have 85 percent water stock on Wednesday. The seven lakes and dam reservoirs that supply drinking water to Mumbai are Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna.

Currently, Mumbai’s water supply is facing water cut by 20% from August 5. According to this, 3080 million liters of water is supplied to Mumbai every day. Earlier, 3,850 million liters of water was being supplied daily.
If the current water accumulated in the reservoir is calculated with the daily water supply which is 3080 million liters, then this amount of water supply will be sufficient for the next more than 400 days i.e. 14 months till next 10th September 2021.–By Vikas Nag
