Ahead of this year’s Dahi Handi celebrations, the Maharashtra government has unveiled a comprehensive accident insurance scheme for Govindas, extending financial protection to nearly 1.6 lakh participants across the state. The initiative is aimed at providing security to those taking part in the high-risk human pyramid formations that are a hallmark of the Janmashtami festival.
Under the newly approved scheme, every registered Govinda will be covered by accident insurance offering compensation of up to ₹10 lakh in the event of death or severe permanent disability sustained during the celebrations. The move is expected to strengthen safety measures while offering financial relief to participants and their families in case of unfortunate incidents.
The government has also outlined compensation for various categories of injuries. Participants who suffer the loss of a single limb or one eye will be eligible for ₹5 lakh, while those who sustain permanent total disability will receive the maximum insurance benefit of ₹10 lakh. Compensation for permanent partial disability will be determined according to the terms of the insurance policy.
Apart from accident compensation, the scheme also provides medical support for injured Govindas. Participants requiring hospitalisation after an accident during Dahi Handi celebrations will receive reimbursement of treatment expenses up to ₹1 lakh, subject to the conditions of the insurance coverage. The provision is designed to reduce the financial burden of emergency medical care.
The insurance programme comes as thousands of Govinda pathaks prepare for Dahi Handi events organised across Maharashtra. Every year, teams compete by forming multi-layered human pyramids to break a suspended earthen pot, a tradition inspired by Lord Krishna’s childhood tales. While the festival is known for its enthusiasm and large cash prizes, it has also witnessed several accidents due to falls during pyramid formations.
By introducing insurance protection, the state government aims to promote safer participation while ensuring that Govindas and their families receive financial assistance if accidents occur. The initiative is expected to benefit participants across Maharashtra as preparations for one of the state’s most celebrated festivals gather pace.
