A suspected student gunman opened fire inside a high school in Thailand’s Nonthaburi province on Friday, leaving at least two people dead and several others injured, according to initial reports from local media. Authorities have launched a major security operation as investigators work to establish the sequence of events and the motive behind the attack.
The incident occurred at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district, located about 20 kilometres northwest of Bangkok. Emergency responders, police personnel and medical teams rushed to the campus soon after reports of gunfire emerged.
Student Allegedly Opened Fire Inside School
Preliminary reports indicate that the suspected shooter was a student at the school. Following the firing, the suspect allegedly barricaded himself inside a third-floor section of the building, triggering a large-scale emergency response and evacuation of students and staff.
Authorities secured the campus while rescue personnel evacuated those trapped inside and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Casualties Reported As Probe Begins
Thai media reported that at least two people lost their lives in the shooting, while several others sustained injuries. Officials have not yet released a final casualty figure, and the exact number of victims is expected to be confirmed after the investigation progresses.
Police have begun collecting evidence and speaking to witnesses as part of the inquiry.
Emergency Teams Rush To School
Images circulating online showed ambulances, rescue workers and police surrounding the school campus as frightened students were escorted to safety. Medical teams were seen treating the injured outside the premises before transferring them to hospitals.
Royal Thai Police acknowledged that a shooting had taken place but initially withheld further details as the operation continued.
Suspect Reportedly Dies During Incident
According to later reports citing provincial police officials, the suspected student gunman died by suicide after the attack. Among those injured were reportedly a teacher and three students.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine what led to the shooting, while officials are expected to release more information after completing preliminary inquiries.
