Deadly Clash Over Sand Mining Shocks Chhattisgarh
A violent confrontation allegedly linked to a long-running sand mining rivalry turned deadly in Chhattisgarh’s Korea district, leaving three people dead and several others injured. The incident has sparked political controversy and renewed concerns over illegal mining activities in the state.
Police have arrested four suspects so far and launched a large-scale search operation to trace other accused individuals named in the case.
Attack on Vehicles Turns Fatal
According to investigators, the victims were travelling in two vehicles through Katgodi village in Sonhat tehsil when they allegedly came under attack from a rival group.
Police said one of the vehicles was reportedly hit by a truck, triggering a fire that quickly engulfed the SUV. While some occupants managed to escape by breaking windows and forcing open doors, others were unable to get out in time.
Officials further stated that individuals who escaped the burning vehicle were allegedly attacked during the confrontation that followed.
BJP Leader Among Those Killed
Among the deceased was Bharat Singh, a local political figure reportedly associated with the BJP.
The other victims were identified as Virendra Pratap Singh and Nagendra Singh.
Police officials said Virendra suffered fatal injuries during the attack, while Nagendra sustained severe burn injuries and later succumbed.
The deaths have sent shockwaves through the region and intensified calls for strict action against those involved.
Police Arrest Four, Hunt for More Accused
Law enforcement authorities confirmed that multiple individuals have been named in the FIR.
“Nine accused have been named and others are also mentioned in the FIR. Four of them have been arrested. Remaining accused are also being looked for. The sides were in a dispute,” IG Surguja Deepak Kumar Jha said while addressing the media.
Investigators are examining the circumstances that led to the violence and are gathering evidence from the scene.
Long-Running Rivalry Under Scanner
Preliminary findings suggest the incident may be connected to a prolonged dispute between two groups over sand mining activities in the area.
Police believe tensions had been building for some time before erupting into violence. Officials are now investigating whether earlier conflicts between the rival sides contributed to the deadly clash.
Political War of Words Begins
The incident has quickly entered the political arena, with opposition leaders accusing the ruling BJP government of failing to curb illegal mining activities.
Chhattisgarh Congress president Deepak Baij alleged that illegal sand mining continues under political protection and demanded accountability.
“Sand mafias have been operating under government patronage in Chhattisgarh. Illegal sand mining is being carried out under the protection of BJP leaders. The deceased was a BJP leader, and those accused of the attack are also linked to the BJP,” Baij said.
The BJP has not yet issued an official response regarding the allegations.
Demand for Wider Probe
The killings have also drawn reactions from members of the Kshatriya community, who have demanded a comprehensive investigation into the case.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has taken note of the incident and assured that strict action will be taken against those found responsible.
