IAF AN-32 Crashes During Landing at Assam Airbase; Pilot Feared Dead

An Indian Air Force transport aircraft met with a serious accident during landing operations at an airbase in Assam on Saturday, triggering an emergency response and raising fears over the fate of the pilot.

The incident involved an Antonov AN-32, a workhorse aircraft widely used by the Indian Air Force for transport and logistical missions across the country.

Aircraft Damaged During Landing

According to preliminary information, the aircraft encountered difficulties during the landing phase at the airbase near Jorhat. The impact left the aircraft heavily damaged, with portions of the wreckage scattered across the site.

Defence personnel and emergency teams quickly moved into the area, securing the location and beginning rescue operations soon after the accident.

Fire Breaks Out After Impact

Witnesses reported flames and thick smoke emerging from the aircraft moments after it came down. Firefighting units stationed at the base were immediately deployed and worked to contain the blaze.

Images from the scene showed extensive structural damage to the aircraft, while security forces restricted access to facilitate emergency operations and evidence collection.

Pilot Feared Dead

While officials have yet to release a detailed casualty report, initial information indicates that the pilot is feared to have lost his life in the crash.

Authorities have not officially confirmed the number of personnel on board at the time of the accident, and efforts are underway to establish the full extent of casualties and injuries.

Investigation Expected

The exact cause of the crash remains unknown. Aviation and defence authorities are expected to launch a detailed inquiry to determine whether technical failure, operational factors or weather conditions played a role in the incident.

The Indian Air Force is yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the accident.

Vital Aircraft in IAF Operations

The AN-32 has been a key component of the Indian Air Force’s transport fleet for decades. Known for its ability to operate in difficult terrain and high-altitude regions, the aircraft is regularly deployed for troop movement, logistics support and supply missions.
