Political activity intensified in West Bengal on Saturday as investigators launched parallel operations involving individuals linked to senior Trinamool Congress leaders, drawing attention to ongoing probes in the state.
A significant police presence was witnessed near the residence of Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata as officers conducted a search operation connected to one of his close associates.
Search Operation Focuses on Political Aide
According to sources, teams from local law enforcement agencies carried out an early-morning operation while attempting to trace Sumit Roy, who is associated with Banerjee’s office.
Investigators are examining allegations that money was allegedly collected from individuals on the promise of securing party nominations. Authorities are now gathering evidence and questioning those connected to the matter as part of the ongoing probe.
Officials completed the search and later left the premises. No official response had been issued from Banerjee’s office regarding the allegations at the time of reporting.
Mamata Banerjee Visits Residence
Amid the developments, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee arrived at Abhishek Banerjee’s residence, attracting further political attention.
While party leaders refrained from making public comments, the visit came as investigators continued their inquiries into the allegations surrounding Roy.
CID Notice to Abhishek Banerjee
The latest developments follow a notice issued by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to Abhishek Banerjee, directing him to appear before investigators on June 16.
The notice relates to a separate investigation concerning remarks allegedly made during an election campaign. Officials reportedly attempted to hand over the notice directly at his residence before eventually serving it through his office.
Investigators said the case originated from a complaint filed during the election period and was subsequently transferred to the CID for further examination.
ED Expands Recruitment Scam Probe
In a separate development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out search operations at multiple locations linked to Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra.
Teams reportedly visited several premises in Kolkata and adjoining districts as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged municipal recruitment scam.
Sources indicated that multiple properties connected to the veteran TMC leader were covered during the operation, with officials examining documents and other materials relevant to the case.
